How Do I Start A Profitable Blog In Nigeria

A few years ago, I was new to the whole blogging space and it was overwhelming for me and just a few bloggers then could give out some blogging secrets.

Right now, as a blogger with my experience from building some other of my blogs, I’m going to be giving you detailed steps on how to start a blog in Nigeria, not just any type of blog, but the ones that are valuable to society and also profitable.

In Nigeria, a lot of people tend to just rush right into the most popular niche; entertainment forgetting that other niches are even more profitable.

Stick with me, I’m going to give you simple steps on all of that and all the means to start a profitable blog in Nigeria.

Here are the seven best steps needed to set up a blog in Nigeria

1- Pick A Suitable Niche To Start A Profitable Blog In Nigeria

If you have been checking out ” how do I start up a blog” frequently on different search engines, then picking out a suitable niche is the first and most important step while you are trying to start a blog.

A lot of bloggers say to buy a domain name and hosting first and then think of a blog niche for your blog, later on, this is wrong because your niche would determine the kind of blog name your blog would have.

This process is a top priority when it comes to the success of your blog.

Before you pick a niche for your blog, always have the following in mind

  • Choose a niche with high search volume
  • Choose a niche that you can always find contents for
  • Choose a niche you can always keep up with
  • Choose a niche that provides value because value always stands the test of time
  • Choose a niche that is profitable because whether you like it or not, we would all want to make money from blogging even though a lot of people claim it’s just a hobby.
  • Don’t choose a niche that is so narrow, it’s going to make your work even harder.

I wrote an entire post about different types of blogs to start and different niches to venture into and how to do so, read it here.

2- Choose Your Blog’s Name/ Domain Names To Start A Profitable Blog In Nigeria

Choosing a name for your blog is the second most important step you would need while trying to start a blog in Nigeria. This step is important because the blog’s name gives your brand(blog) a brand identity.

One should always be careful and conscious while picking out a blog name because it cannot be changed after you have purchased a domain name and hosted it with them( the next step).

Here are the factors one should look out for before choosing a blog name

  • Always look out for names that are easy to spell
  • Always look out for names that are easy to pronounce
  • Make sure your blog name is not too long
  • If it’s a personal brand, your name is advised except it’s too long
  • If it’s a product or service, the name of that product or service is advised.
  • While choosing suffixes for your blog, suffixes like -.net, and  -.com are usually more popular, and easy to use, use them.

While you are choosing a name for your blog, always have it settled in your mind that you should pick the best for your blog.

3- Buy The Best Domain Name, Hosting And SSL For Your Blog

Domain name is the name of your website with the suffix(.net, .com, .ng, .org, e.t.c)

Example www.lindaorjiakor.com is my domain name.

After you have chosen a domain name, you need to check if that particular domain name has been taken already. All you need to do is take that particular name to either Qservers, Bluehost, Namecheap or any other reliable hosting company’s website to check the availability.

After you have checked and it’s available,  it’s time to pay for hosting services and also SSL. SSL means Secure Sockets Layer. It is a secure protocol for sending information securely over the net.

Most companies offer domain name, hosting and SSL services.

The below are the best and reliable hosting companies

My two most favourite hosting companies are  Bluehost and Qservers in Nigeria because they are both reliable and also very affordable. For Bluehost, you get hosting as low as $2.95 / month and for servers, you get hosting as low as 500 Naira per month.

There are other cheaper services but they are not as reliable as the ones mentioned.

4- Choose The Best Platform You Would Want To Launch Your Blog

Once the domain name,  hosting and SSL fees have been paid, it’s time to start editing your site if you are using WordPress.com.

Other platforms like Squarespace, Wix, blogger, Joomla don’t require you to pay for the domain name and hosting because it’s already in their subscription fee.

WordPress.com is the best and most flexible platform because it allows you to choose everything you want to, from themes, fonts, font colours, don’t sizes, add extra CSS and Php codes.

WordPress also allows you to install plugins for different purposes on your site.

From all the options above, you should pick a suitable platform to launch your blog.

5- Launch Your Blog On Any Of Those Platforms

After you have chosen a platform to launch your blog, it’s time to start editing and optimizing every page for search engines before launch.

For WordPress blogs, you would need to install different plugins for Search Engine optimization like Yoast and All in one SEO, plugins to share your posts, installing Grammarly on your device to aid editing and many more things to do before launch.

6- Publish The Very First Blog Post On Your Blog

The moment you have clicked publish on any post on your blog, you are now a blogger but it doesn’t end there.

So many things need to be done before you publish your first blog post or any blog post.

You need to properly size every image you would use to enhance the site speed and SEO for every blog post.

After your first blog post, you need to install the google site kit plugin also to track your audience.

7- Start Writing Guest Posts For Other Higher Domain Blogs To Increase Site Authority

Website authority is an SEO concept that refers to the “strength” of a given domain.

Some people call this “domain authority,”  When we talk about domain authority, we’re talking about a general SEO concept that’s synonymous with website authority.

Google representatives consistently deny the use of “domain authority” as a ranking factor. But according to Google’s John Mueller, they do have a sitewide score that “maps to similar things.”

Higher domain authority scores mean you are most likely to rank for keywords you want to.

Amongst other means to increase the domain authority of a website, the best is by writing for other domains with higher domain authority and having them include your links in the bio on their website or include a link to your website within the post. This alone helps improve your visibility and domain authority.

For bloggers in Nigeria, adverts on their website especially from google Adsense is a major way they make money in Nigeria from their blogs.

Google Adsense uses the popular RPM system used by a lot of advertising companies.

RPM means Revenue Per 1,000 Impressions, it’s calculated by dividing your estimated earnings by the number of page views, impressions, or queries you received, then multiplying by 1000.

Different advertisement companies place adverts on blogs, but google sense is the most popular.

When bloggers apply to be publishers on Google AdSense, Google evaluates that site and checks if it’s fit enough to bring customers or create awareness to their advertisement partners.

If it’s a positive match, Google accepts the request, the publisher decides on the type of advert or banner he/she wants on their site and inputs the lines of code into the head, footer or even body of the website.

Affiliate marketing is one of the biggest ways to make money in Nigeria but not a lot of bloggers have gone into affiliate marketing.

It simply means marketing any product to an audience online and when they decide to buy, they buy using your tracking code and the company gives you a certain percentage from it.

In affiliate marketing, money is not made from just referring people to products, you can also refer people to services.

Bloggers make money by referring people to products and services related to their niche and when the customers place an order using the tracking code or coupon or when they buy them, the company pays the referral the agreed amount.
